As November is Adopt a Senior Pet month, we wanted to help shine a light on older pets to show they are just as deserving of a loving home and are fantastic companions to have! Read on to hear one of our volunteer’s experiences about bringing a senior pet into her family...
Often older pets find it hard to find a new home once they arrive into care and these pets can find adjusting to life in care harder. We adopted Jack a few years ago and I remember the rescue telling us that they were worried that he would struggle to find a home due to his age. I was surprised as he was a great fit for our home. Jack was happy to be left alone for a few hours each day, enjoyed walks, could live with cats and was even already trained. What was not to love!
Here are a few reasons why adopting an older pet may be a great fit for you:
Calmer and still playful – many older pets make a great calm companion once they have settled into their new homes. They can still be playful and be part of the family whilst being less energetic and less likely to damage furniture than puppies or kittens!
Loving and Loyal – whilst they may play less than their puppy or kitten days, love is everlasting.
Basic training – as an older pet many need less training as they often already know the basics and yet are still able to learn. You can teach an old dog or cat new tricks!
Personality and history – often fosterers and carers have been given a history of the pet, such as who they can happily live alongside such as other pets and children. Plus, the rescue often knows about the pets likes and dislikes and their personality. This can help you decide if they would be a good fit for you.
Can you help to give an older pet a happy loving home? They have so much love to offer and need someone to give them another chance at happiness. We felt so lucky to share Jack’s golden years with him. Seeing him blossom, sharing his ‘firsts with us’ and finding new favourite toys was wonderful. We thank you Jack!
