RATS to the Rescue: Susie's Story

On Saturday 27th October a phone call came in during the afternoon to say that a mother cat and 5 kittens had been found under a hedge in Biggleswade.  After ascertaining that the mother was not feral said I would see what the position was at the kitten/mum cattery.

Irene, our Kitten and Queen fosterer, very rarely declines to take in very young kittens or pregnant mums (unless she is totally full), but atthis time of the year it is coming very close to when she closes for her annual holiday.

During a quick chat with Irene, I offered to feed them when she is away if she wants to take them in - and the answer was: Yes! So both Mum and Kittens duly arrived later that afternoon.

The kittens were approx 3 days old and eyes were still firmly closed. There were 2 tabbies with wonderful markings (just like their mother) and 3 black with a touch of white.

Unfortunately, we lost the smallest one, who obviously had not suckled since being born and was unable to take nourishment even from a pipette.

But as you can see from the photos the other 4 are thriving and now just over a week later their eyes are starting to open.  Their mother, who Irene has named Susie, is also very friendly, so no doubt good homes will be found for them (and her) when they are are old enough to leave her.

This is the sort of little story that we love as these kittens - or at least the other 2 smaller ones, would probably have perished if left outside.  It makes our job worthwhile.

Where Susie came from nobody knows, but with our help she and her little family will all end up in kind, loving homes.
